Saturday July 9, 1 to 3 pm is our big day to move small rocks at Old Town State Historic Park's Native Plant Garden. Rocks will be delivered next to the Garden, and volunteers will load it into wheelbarrows and wheel it downhill to several shrubby areas to be placed as mulch. The San Diego River Park is providing some wheelbarrows and shovels, but if you can borrow a wheelbarrow and/or shovel, you could help get the job done faste...r. For those who don't have the muscles to load and spread the rock mulch, there are other tasks in the garden in an out-of the way area: we hope to dig out weeds that are hiding along the concrete channel and to pick up litter there, too. We hope that a few volunteers who can't do weeding or rock moving, due to physical constraints, will offer to learn how to help explain the Garden to visitors who pass through the garden while we have work parties, and to do so at future events. The self-guided map to the garden will be available and Peter or Mike can help training a few such volunteers, who then will be able to give the tour to other visitors. The Garden is located at the very west end of Old Town State Historic Park, at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets, right across from the MTS bus/trolley/train station. When you see the grove of trees below the two story white McCoy House/museum, you are almost there. Park in the free lots in Old Town - one is right next to the garden at Calhoun and Taylor, another on by Congress Street 100 yds east of the MTS station. On Saturdays, free overflow parking for Old Town Park visitors is also available in the parking lot for the huge CalTrans building across Taylor Street from the Garden. Join GVA Volunteers each second Saturday of every month (1-3 pm) to help maintain the Native Plant Garden in Old Town State Park. This is GVA's longest running, continuous event. Show your support and be a part of San Diego Goth history by dedicating an hour or two to this special place.

ow that the weather is cooling off, join GVA Volunteers each second Saturday of every month (1-3 pm) to help maintain the Native Plant Garden in Old Town State Park. Show your support and be a part of San Diego Goth history by dedicating an hour or two to this special place. You don't have to be a gardener or have any experience with keeping gardens. What do we do? Pull weeds, trim bushes and sometimes pick up area trash. All are welcome! We will sign off for students who need the volunteer credit for school. If you have seasonal affective disorder, what a great way to keep that at bay by doing a bit of gardening once a month. All supplies are provided. But bring work gloves if you have them and wear closed toe shoes. Come out! Join us! If it's raining, the event is canceled. WHERE: Meet in the garden just north of the McCoy House and across the street from the Old Town Transit Center, just off Taylor Street.
